The question that has been present throughout my creative process is What do I embody? I have addressed this question in a number of ways, but the most prevalent approach has been through philosopher Mark Johnson´s work in the field of embodied cognition.
One of the key concepts that has influenced my work is what Johnson refers to as moral imagination. Johnson proposes that “in order to adapt and grow we must imagine new dimensions for our character so that we may transform the limits of our own convictions.” My response to this is the creation of what I have termed Imaginary Embodiments.
The use of textiles and sewing in my work is also connected to the idea of embodiment by the association with clothing. During my process I often feel that I am constructing something that I have worn in a metaphorical sense, as if I were shedding an experience or a layer of skin that contains the memory of something that I once embodied.
